Ceramic capacitors are a compact and widely used family of capacitors whose dielectric material is ceramic. Multilayer (MLCC) types are used as surface-mount parts on boards, while disc types are found in through-hole board applications. Filtering of supply lines, placement next to ICs for bypass purposes and suppression of high-frequency noise are common functions of these capacitors.
In selection, the capacitance value, voltage rating, dielectric class (in terms of temperature and capacitance stability), package size and mounting method should be evaluated. Two capacitors with the same capacitance value may behave differently under temperature and voltage if their dielectric types differ.
